Appendix H: Nurasagi measures and weights

Before Hurashastra left Shuirel for Nurasag, Shuirel had adopted many features of Ronovan culture, for instance the Ronovan system of writing (the demotic system, mentioned in Appendix D).

Similarly, the rather simple and practical Ronovan system of linear measures replaced the more complicated, original Shuirelian system, and it was thus adopted in Nurasag as well. The Ronovan system consisted of the following units:

Ronovan length measures

Name of unit (in English)

Metric equivalent

Finger

21.11 mm

Hand

4 fingers

84.44 mm

Cubit

5 hands

422.2 mm

Pace

4 cubits

1.6888 m

Mile

1000 paces

1688.8 m

The metric equivalents are, of course, not exact since there is no connection between the Ronovan and metric systems, but fortuitously they are valid to 6 significant figures, except for the hand which is correct only to 5 figures.

As for weights, Shuirel retained its own system even after the Ronovan conquest, and consequently this system was passed on to Nurasag. However, trade with Jistran grew but Jistrani exports languished due to high prices in Jistran caused by the large amount of silver from the Lardona silver mine circulating there. Consequently there was a substantial net flow of silver from Jistran to Nurasag.

The weight system used in Jistran was very similar (and indeed related) to the Shuirelian/Nurasagi system. It was inconvenient to the Syndicate and the saushanate to melt down Jistrani coins and re-mint them to Nurasagi weights. Eventually the Syndicate asked the saushan to declare Jistrani currency legal tender in Nurasag, and he complied. Since then it has been customary in Nurasag to use Jistrani weights for silver but Shuirelian weights for everything else.
